The lira is subdivided into 100 kuruş. The symbol for Turkish Lira is TL
From January 1, 2005 until December 31, 2008, Turkey's currency was called the New Turkish Lira (Yeni Türk Lirasi, YTL or TRY). As of January 1, 2009, the "New" (Yeni) has been dropped. The currency is again the Turkish Lira.
The First lira was introduced in 1844. Replacing the kuruş as the principal unit of currency, the kuruş continues to circulate as a subdivision of the lira. The para also continued to be used, with 40 para = 1 kuruş. Until the 1930s, the Arabic script was used on Turkish coins and banknotes.
Between 1844 and 1881, the lira was on a bimetallic standard, with 1 lira = 6.61519 grams pure gold = 99.8292 grams pure silver.
