The Local Currency for Northern Cyprus is YTL (New Turkish Lira) though you will find that all major currencies are accepted, likewise are major credit cards and travellers’ cheques. Although it must be your choice, it maybe a good idea for you to wait until you arrive in North Cyprus before exchanging money. The exchange rate fluctuates daily so by doing this you can check the daily rate of exchange being offered by banks, exchange bureaus and hotels. The lira is subdivided into 100 kuruş. As of January 1, 2009, the "New" (Yeni) has been dropped. The currency is again the Turkish Lira. The First lira was introduced in 1844. Replacing the kuruş as the principal unit of currency, the kuruş continues to circulate as a subdivision of the lira. The para also continued to be used, with 40 para = 1 kuruş. Until the 1930s, the Arabic script was used on Turkish coins and banknotes.
